INTERVIEWS WITH FILM PRODUCER NIK POWELL AND COSTUME DESIGNER SAMMY SHELDON DIFFER

Nik Powell is one of the UK’s most respected film producers. For thirty-five years, he has been behind many classic and cult films. These include THE CRYING GAME, THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, starring David Bowie; and MONA LISA. He has often collaborated with leading director Neil Jordan. Other films that Nik has produced include SCANDAL, based on the 1960s’ Profumo affair and starring John Hurt; BACKBEAT, on the origins of the Beatles; LITTLE VOICE and Shane Meadows’ 24 7: TWENTY FOUR SEVEN. In 2005, he became the Director of the National Film and Television School. In the early 1970s, he set up Virgin Records with Richard Branson.

Sammy has designed the costumes for a wide range of popular and acclaimed films. These include JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, THE IMITATION GAME, V FOR VENDETTA and THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, starring Al Pacino. Her work also includes five superhero films – ANT-MAN, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, the KICK-ASS films and HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY. She is also the costume designer for the first two features directed by Alex Garland, EX MACHINA and Netflix film ANNIHILATION. Sammy’s first feature film was for Ridley Scott’s BLACK HAWK DOWN, soon after being an assistant costume designer on GLADIATOR. She has had three BAFTA nominations; for THE IMITATION GAME, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE and CANTERBURY TALES.

1st Wednesday monthly - An experimental event

Artists: Sowari Modular / Slate Pipe Banjo Draggers / Rare Form / Laura Netz

Sowari Modular - Chaotic Improv Krell
For this performance Phil Durrant - aka Sowari Modular - will perform an improvisation using an extended ‘Krell Patch’. This is based on the 1959 movie Forbidden Planet, in a segment where they supposedly play the music of the ancient Krell race. When it emerges from the skronky murk, the Krell is a writhing, cavorting phantasm. In general terms, each note has a random pitch, envelope and duration. The patch links early sci-fi soundscapes with the noisy/chaotic world that we currently live in.

Slate Pipe Banjo Draggers - Sound Art Improv Cassette

The Slate Pipe Banjo Draggers is the name of the music and sound project of sound artist Andy Rowe. He creates sounds drawing from a vast collection of found, bought, self made and personally commissioned instruments and noise making devices. Andy Rowe currently performs a solo set using a selection of up to fifteen Walkmans and mini and micro-cassette players and dictaphones.

Rare Form - Dark ambient Drone Neoclassical
Rare Form employs synths, experimental guitars, tape loops, and samples to create atmospheric neoclassical drones, build ups, and crescendos.

Medial Ages by Laura Netz - DIY electronics strobe lights
The artist uses optoelectronic oscillators which produce a repetitively modulated wave. The light sources control the circuits modulating the signal. In a sound/light integration, the modulation of tone activates an interactive system based on DIY circuitry. It is a self-generated sonic machine creating a syncopated, high-pitched, noisy beep.

Sonic Electronics proposes an inclusive event to the LGBT community, female artists, no discrimination on gender, races, MH, disability.

Every Thursday / Free entry / 7 pm to 12 pm

A jam session where the goodness is in the detail, the vibe, the sharing, the empathy - our policy is that the loudest musician has to be hearing the detail of the quietest musician, for the best balance, the deepest flow..... we like to hear the vocalist's expression in all its fullness.

With a full PA, drum kit, bass and guitar amps, piano and mics, with congas and percussion and monitors and helpful sound crew, this session has built a solid reputation over the past year, for exquisite and expressive jams.

Featuring spoken word, song and instrumental breaks.

Musicians change places, the vibe grows and grows...

And it's all free.

Small Bar, comfy chesterfields, smokers' garden - what's not to like about a jam session at the legendary The Others!

1st Friday of every month! / £5 before 9 pm, £7 after / 8pm - 1 am
